Bands run from the lowest current published plan for 40 guests to the typical figure with standard upgrades; shrine bands add a dinner for 40 at a nearby venue. Attire, flowers and photography upgrades push totals higher; our planning fee is separate. Rate and sources are at the foot of the page.

Luxury Kyoto city center wedding venues

Kyoto city center, around Kawaramachi, Oike and the Kamo River, keeps guests within walking distance of restaurants, Pontocho and Nishiki Market, and 15 to 20 minutes by taxi from Kyoto Station.

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto

The Ritz-Carlton sits on the Kamo River at Nijo-Ohashi bridge, three minutes from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station. It takes one couple a day and gives you a private floor, with a ceremony room for up to 72 and the Takane room seating 6 to 110. It suits couples who want the most exclusive hotel wedding in Kyoto. For 40 guests budget $18,000 to $22,000 all-in. Caveat: its 70-guest plans are labelled reception only, so confirm the ceremony fee; outside video, flowers and cake are not allowed, and your own photographer costs ¥55,000.

Hotel Okura Kyoto

Hotel Okura Kyoto stands at Kawaramachi-Oike with direct access from the subway. It has St John's Chapel for 80, a Shinto hall enshrining Shimogamo Shrine's deities, and published plans for ceremonies at Heian, Kamigamo, Shimogamo and Kifune shrines. It suits couples who want a shrine ceremony and a central hotel dinner on one booking. Zexy lists 40 guests at ¥2,070,000: $13,000 to $17,000 all-in. Caveat: outside photographers are restricted in some areas of the hotel, such as the lobby.

Luxury hotel wedding venues in Higashiyama

Park Hyatt Kyoto

Park Hyatt Kyoto sits on Ninenzaka, the stone lane below Kiyomizu-dera, with a terrace looking over the Yasaka Pagoda. It takes one couple a day, seats 6 to 120 (20 to 80 is the sweet spot) and welcomes same-sex couples. Its 30-guest plan is ¥3,208,975 with tax and service, so 40 guests come to about $22,000 to $28,000 all-in. Caveat: in its favour, it charges no bring-in fee at all, so your own photographer and attire are free, though flowers, cake and drinks must come from the hotel.

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

The Four Seasons is built around an 800-year-old pond garden near Sanjusangendo, with a chapel and a garden tea house, and seats 6 to 180. It suits couples who want a large luxury hotel with a real Japanese garden. Zexy lists 40 guests at ¥3,810,000: $24,000 to $28,000 all-in, the most expensive on this page. Caveat: it hosts up to two weddings a day, and your own photographer, videographer or hair stylist costs ¥55,000 each to bring in.

Nijo Castle: a castle wedding in Kyoto city center

Nijo Castle (Moto-rikyu Nijo-jo)

Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hosts weddings through a licensed operator that Kyoto City appoints by public tender, currently the TAGAYA group. Ceremonies are humanist or a tea-ceremony wedding in the Seiryu-en garden and Koun-tei tea house, for 2 to 70 guests and about 60 couples a year. A ceremony-only plan starts at ¥600,000, and 40 guests with dinner come to about $10,500 to $13,000 all-in. Caveat: no reception with food is allowed inside the castle, so dinner is at the operator's venue nearby, and outside attire is not permitted.

Garden and estate wedding venues in Kyoto

The Sodoh Higashiyama Kyoto

The Sodoh is a 6,600 square metre estate in Higashiyama with the Yasaka Pagoda rising above its garden, and more than eight reception rooms for 4 to 150 guests. The whole estate can be hired, and it has a dedicated English destination-wedding programme. For 40 guests budget $12,000 to $15,000 all-in, from Zexy's ¥1.94M estimate to its spring 2027 plan. Caveat: outside dresses, photographers, flowers and favours are not allowed.

Shozan Resort Kyoto

Shozan is a large garden estate in Kinugasa, north-west Kyoto near Kinkaku-ji, known for its autumn maples. It takes one couple a day and hires out the whole venue, seating 6 to 90, with a chapel and garden ceremonies. It suits couples who want privacy and a garden without the Higashiyama crowds. For 40 guests expect $10,000 to $14,000 all-in. Caveat: it is 10 minutes by car from the nearest subway, so book the shuttle from Kyoto Station, and outside dresses are not allowed.

Hoshinoya Kyoto in Arashiyama often comes up here. It does not offer weddings and does not work with outside planners, so we leave it off the list; it is a lovely place to stay after the wedding.

Shrine weddings in Kyoto

Kamigamo Shrine

Kamigamo is one of Kyoto's oldest shrines and a UNESCO site, in the north of the city. Ceremonies cost ¥100,000 at the Hosodono or ¥200,000 before the main sanctuary, with an evening ceremony for two couples a day, and up to 25 attendees per family, 50 in total. With a dinner for 40 at a city center hotel, budget $9,000 to $13,000 all-in. Caveat: bookings open on the first of the month a year before your date, and outside photographers and videographers are banned outright.

Yoshida Shrine

Yoshida Shrine sits on Yoshida hill beside Kyoto University in Sakyo, quieter than the famous shrines and loved for its forested approach. The ceremony fee is ¥100,000 including live gagaku music, the shrine takes two couples a day between 10:00 and 15:00, and the hall holds about 30 attendees. With dinner for 40 nearby, budget about $8,000 to $12,000 all-in. Caveat: the reception has to be elsewhere, and most couples book through one of the shrine's appointed wedding companies.

Heian Jingu Kaikan

Heian Jingu Kaikan is the wedding hall attached to Heian Shrine in Okazaki, with its giant vermilion torii. The Shinto ceremony costs ¥150,000 in the ceremony hall or ¥300,000 in the main sanctuary, and the hall seats 10 to 182, so ceremony and dinner happen in one place. Zexy lists 40 guests at ¥1.79M: $11,000 to $13,500 all-in. It even publishes a plan for international couples. Caveat: it closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Kyoto wedding reception venues: a riverside ryotei

Funatsuru Kyoto Kamogawa Resort

Funatsuru is a former ryotei restaurant on the Kamo River in the city center, a registered tangible cultural property with a rooftop over the water and a summer river terrace. It seats 6 to 170 and a single floor can be hired exclusively. It suits couples who want a Japanese restaurant reception after a shrine ceremony. For 40 guests budget $11,500 to $14,000 all-in, from its ¥2,147,598 40-guest plan. Caveat: sources disagree on whether outside photographers are allowed, so get the bring-in terms in writing.

What does a Kyoto destination wedding cost in 2026?

For 40 guests, the 11 Kyoto venues above cost $8,000 to $28,000 all-in. Shrine ceremonies are cheap (¥100,000 to ¥300,000) but the dinner is where the money goes, and November is the most expensive month: autumn plans run about 10% above spring. Since March 2026 Kyoto City also charges guests an accommodation tax of up to ¥10,000 per person per night at hotels over ¥100,000.

Our Japan wedding cost guide covers photography, attire, florals and guest travel. Kyoto pairs well with a second city: compare Tokyo wedding venues and Osaka wedding venues (15 minutes away by Shinkansen), or see every region in our guide to the best wedding venues in Japan.

Can foreigners get married in Kyoto?

Yes. Every venue here hosts symbolic ceremonies for non-Japanese couples, and most couples register their marriage at home. For a legal marriage in Japan, read our guide to getting married in Japan as a foreigner. Kyoto is also a natural fit for an elopement: a shrine ceremony for two with a photographer is simple to arrange; see our Japan elopement planning page.

Kyoto wedding venue FAQ

What is the best luxury wedding venue in Kyoto city center?

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto on the Kamo River takes one couple a day on a private floor and seats up to 110. For Higashiyama views, Park Hyatt Kyoto also takes one couple a day and charges nothing to bring in your own photographer or attire. Both run about $18,000 to $28,000 all-in for 40 guests.

Can you get married at Nijo Castle?

Yes. Nijo Castle ceremonies are run by a licensed operator appointed by Kyoto City, as a humanist or tea ceremony for 2 to 70 guests, with about 60 weddings a year. You cannot hold a reception with food inside the castle, so dinner is at a venue nearby. For 40 guests budget about $10,500 to $13,000 all-in.

Can you have a wedding at Hoshinoya Kyoto?

Not as a planned wedding. Hoshinoya Kyoto in Arashiyama publishes no wedding offer and does not work with outside planners; Hoshino Resorts markets weddings only at its other properties. Couples who love that stretch of the river usually marry at a shrine or garden venue and stay at Hoshinoya afterwards.

How much does a Kyoto destination wedding cost for 40 guests?

At the 11 venues on this page, about $8,000 to $28,000 all-in, including food, drink, service charge and tax. A shrine ceremony with dinner nearby sits at the bottom, garden estates and Nijo Castle at $10,000 to $15,000, and the luxury hotels at $13,000 to $28,000. Planning fees, attire and photography are on top.

Can foreigners have a Shinto wedding at a Kyoto shrine?

Yes. Kamigamo, Yoshida and Heian shrines all marry non-Japanese couples in a religious ceremony that is not legally binding. Expect strict guest caps (about 30 at Yoshida, 50 at Kamigamo), a ceremony in Japanese, and photography only by approved photographers at some shrines.
